Lindsey:  I loved Jason Mills in the role of The Phantom.  That being his first performance in the role (March 16th matinee in Providence, RI), certain parts seemed quite "cookie cutter" - meaning, it was obvious he didn't yet have free rein to make certain things his own.  The blocking was all very standard.  His voice, however, was a pleasant surprise given his shorter stature.  It possesses a commanding, deep tone to it that with some time is going to have people cowering.  At the same time I felt he demonstrated great flexibility with his character - going from in control to the break of insanity quite well.  He plays a more desperate, loose cannon Erik than others and it was a refreshing experience.  While he may have fallen short vocally once or twice in the show, I still felt he gave a great performance and I enjoyed sitting there watching him.   I hope he goes on to perform this role many more times, and I greatly look forward to seeing him perform in the future!
